Caring for Catchments

There are a number of everyday things that you can do in your home to make a difference to the environment in your catchment.

  • Plant trees that are native your area. These trees take less water and are great habitat for local wildlife.
  • Set up a compost or worm farm to recycle your kitchen waste.
  • Put on a 10cm layer of mulch on your gardens to reduce water use, suppress weeds and slowly improve the soil as the mulch breaks down.
  • Install timers on taps to improve water efficiently.
  • Insulate your home to make heating and cooling more efficient. Therefore using less energy and reducing CO2 into the atmosphere.
  • Switch off lights when they are not being used.
  • Use public transport.
  • For short journeys walk or ride a bike.
  • When shopping refuse to buy products that are over packaged and don't take a plastic shopping bag if you don't really need to.
  • Join a Landcare group.
