Brunswick Catchment

The Brunswick catchment extends from Broken Head, just south of Byron Bay, to Yelgun and is bound inland and to the south by the Richmond catchment and to the north by the Tweed catchment.

The Brunswick catchment incorporates three, small coastal river systems: Brunswick, Belongil and Tallows.

The western portion of the catchment consists largely of mountainous country while in the east, the land is gently undulating, although dissected by moderate to steep ridges. Much of the eastern portion contains low-lying, wetland country.

The main population centres are Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads. This region has established a rich cultural base and reflects the many reasons people move to the North Coast seeking a change of lifestyle. This region has a high density of rural settlement.

The rivers and estuaries tend to be affected by changed runoff conditions due to past clearing and land use practices, including a diversity of agriculture, human settlement and recreational use. Many sections of streams on the coastal floodplain have been straightened and channelled.
